How to Install Windows DVD Maker for Free

Windows DVD Maker is a free tool that Microsoft has made to create Video DVDs that will play in any standard DVD player.  Lets talk a little about all that is required to burn a dvd video that works in almost any dvd player.

The first thing you need to know is that the only recordable dvds that work in most dvd players is DVD-R. Unless your DVD player specifically says it will read different types of disks, it won't. In order for a dvd player to read the audio and video they need to be encoded into *.VOB files. There are open source DVD encoders that also burn DVDs and these will also work in Windows after installing a bit of runtimes, but Windows does offer their dvd encoder free with Windows, you just usually have to download it.

To install Windows DVD Maker go to:
Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features On or Off

Windows Media > Windows DVD Maker
Make sure that Windows DVD Maker, and\or Windows Media is checked, and then click OK.

After doing these steps it may ask you to restart your computer. Once finished, insert a blank DVD, and It should prompt you with a new option that asks if you want to burn a new DVD. Burning dvds this way makes it really easy to encode any movie that plays in Windows Media Player, and generate a dvd menu automatically even with chapters.

Don't pay for software to burn dvd movies, or dvds for that matter, Microsoft provides it free.
